Quantum Probes of Repulsive Singularities in N = 2 Supergravity
نویسنده
چکیده
Repulsive singularities (“repulsons”) in extended supergravity theories are investigated. These repulsive singularities are related to attractive singularities (“black holes”) in moduli space of extended supergravity vacua. In order to study these repulsive singularities a scalar test-particle in the background of a repulson is investigated. It is shown, using a partial wave expansion, that the wave function of the scalar particle vanishes at the curvature singularity at the origin. In addition the connection to higher dimensional p-brane solutions including anti-branes is discussed. PACS: 04.70; 04.65; 03.67.L;

Giant gravitons in non-supersymmetric backgrounds
We consider giant gravitons as probes of a class of ten-dimensional solutions of type IIB supergravity which arise as lifts of solutions of U(1)3 gauged N = 2 supergravity in five-dimensions. Surprisingly it is possible to solve exactly for minimum energy configurations of these spherical D3-brane probes in the compact directions, even in backgrounds which preserve no supersymmetry. The branes ...
متن کاملM/F theory orbifolds
We consider M-theory on (T ×R)/Zn with M5 branes wrapped on R2. One can probe this background with M5 branes wrapped on T2. The theories on the probes provide many new examples of N = 2 field theories without Lagrangian description. All these theories have Coulomb branches, and we find the corresponding SeibergWitten curves. The exact solution is encoded in a Hitchin system on an orbifolded tor...
متن کاملPopulating the swampland : the case of U ( 1 ) 496 and E 8 × U ( 1 ) 248
For d = 10 N = 1 SUGRA coupled to d = 10 N = 1 SYM, anomaly cancellation places severe constraints on the allowed gauge groups. Besides the ones known to appear in string theory, only U(1) and E8 × U(1) are allowed. There are no known theories of quantum gravity that reduce in some limit to these two last supergravity theories, and in this note I present some evidence that those quantum theorie...
متن کاملCosmological Singularities and a Conjectured Gravity/coset Correspondence
We review the recently discovered connection between the Belinsky-Khalatnikov-Lifshitz-like “chaotic” structure of generic cosmological singularities in eleven-dimensional supergravity and the “last” hyperbolic Kac-Moody algebra E10. This intriguing connection suggests the existence of a hidden “correspondence” between supergravity (or even M-theory) and null geodesic motion on the infinite-dim...
متن کاملSupersymmetry, Trace Anomaly and Naked Singularities
We discuss stationary supersymmetric bosonic configurations of the EinsteinMaxwell theory embedded in N = 2 supergravity. Some of these configurations, including the Kerr-Newman solutions with m = |q| and arbitrary angular momentum per unit mass a, exhibit naked singularities. However, N = 2 supergravity has trace anomaly. The nonvanishing anomalous energy-momentum tensor of these Kerr-Newman s...
